Road warning system

In a warning system for motorways or other roads on tensioning a cable which extends between posts or poles spaced along one or each side of a carriageway a switch on a post is operated so as to energize one or more visual warning signals located in the direction preceding the post carrying the switch. In the event of an accident any person on the spot can push, pull or lean on the cable to actuate the switch on one of the posts so as to cause a lamp or lamps on the post carrying the switch and the preceding posts to flash and warn following motorists to stop. The switch may at the same time send a signal to a control centre or police station so that help can be sent to the scene of the accident. The control centre or police station may temporarily modify the visual signal, e.g. the flashing periodicity may be modified or the flash may be interrupted, so as to indicate that the signal has been received. The switch may control a relay which actuates further switches or contactors which feed current, e.g. drawn from the mains, to the lights.
